The Fort Worth Stock Show Is Here

January 18, 2016 by Ginger

Giddy-up! It’s that time of year folks, time for the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo!  As the official site says, “This Thing Is Legendary®”.   Established in 1896, the Stock Show and Rodeo is a time-honored tradition for these parts.  The classic Fort Worth event started officially this past weekend (Friday, January 15th) and will go through Saturday, February 6th.    I know my husband Jeff has been taking his girls annually to the Fort Worth Stock Show since they were old enough to step over and around the piles if you know what I mean.  It’s a great way for youngsters to get up close and personal with livestock and make that connection.     His youngest, Miranda said her fondest memories were the goats “because they would eat anything we tried to feed them” and the rabbits, which encouraged her to own her own rabbit some time later.

Want to visit more than once? I don’t blame you! Remember, the secret here is the Souvenir Pin – each pin is good for admission to the Grounds, Livestock, Horse Shows and more for the entire 23 day show. Plus, it’s a cool collector’s item for each year.

Winter Restaurant Week Is Upon Us

January 12, 2016 by Ginger

So you’ve started that diet for your New Year’s resolution?  Well maybe you want to go ahead and schedule your first cheat meal — the Winter Restaurant Week is upon us!  This is a new event similar to DFW Restaurant Week which happens every year in late August.  The post-holiday quiet for restaurants is a good use of time to offer you fixed-price meals with a portion of the proceeds going to charity.  And, lucky for us, the majority of the participating restaurants are located in Fort Worth, or at least Tarrant County.  Check out this article from the Guide Live site to see a full list of restaurants, meal prices and links to their menus.   Don’t wait! Reservation spots are bound to fill up fast.  Treat yourself and a loved one or two to a special place you’ve been wanting to try, now at a reduced price with a charitibable bonus taboot!

P.S.  My favorite on the Winter Restaurant Week list is Texas de Brazil, and hey, it totally fits in a low carb diet!

Election Day Nov 3rd – Vote to Reduce Your Property Tax Bill

November 2, 2015 by Ginger

Proposition 1 – SJR 1

Yep, you read it correctly: vote to reduce your property tax bill. If you are a homeowner living in Texas, you are well aware of the high property taxes we pay. Tomorrow on Election Day, you will have your chance to reduce your total property tax paid by increasing your exemptions. Voting YES for Proposition 1 means you want to amend the Texas Constitution to increase the homestead exemption by $10,000. Currently the limit is $15,000, so this would bring the total exemption up to $25,000. Another aspect of Prop 1 is to ban real estate transfer taxes (taxes on the sale of your home) permanently — it comes up in every state election. In addition, Prop 1 helps seniors and those with disabilities by giving them additional tax-relief and a lower property tax cap.

Want more details? Excellent! You can read the official ballot language for Prop 1 and the additional six propositions to consider at VoteTexas.gov.

Where Do I Vote?

Has it been a while since you voted? Don’t have your voter’s card handy? That’s OK, we’ve got you covered. This Tarrant County Voter Lookup can give you all your details. Just enter your name and click Search. If you are registered it will pull up your precinct and the poll location for November 3rd.

The Arlington Heights neighborhood touches on these five voting precincts: 4016, 4086, 4116, 4334, 4350. If you are curious, you can go to the Voting Precinct Individual Maps page to see where your home address falls.

Go forth and vote!
