Proposition 1 – SJR 1
Yep, you read it correctly: vote to reduce your property tax bill. If you are a homeowner living in Texas, you are well aware of the high property taxes we pay. Tomorrow on Election Day, you will have your chance to reduce your total property tax paid by increasing your exemptions. Voting YES for Proposition 1 means you want to amend the Texas Constitution to increase the homestead exemption by $10,000. Currently the limit is $15,000, so this would bring the total exemption up to $25,000. Another aspect of Prop 1 is to ban real estate transfer taxes (taxes on the sale of your home) permanently — it comes up in every state election. In addition, Prop 1 helps seniors and those with disabilities by giving them additional tax-relief and a lower property tax cap.
